Non-Credit: English as a Second Language for College and Careers (High-Intermediate)

The Certificate of Competency in English as a Second Language for College and Careers (High-Intermediate) prepares students to advance to higher levels of ESL, both credit and noncredit mirrored, by providing foundational English-language skills for students to progress towards higher level coursework as they continue their educational pathways. Students will be exposed to academic skills courses for learners of English as an additional language in which they will learn and practice how to identify main ideas in short texts, apply words learned in their given form by using them to write original sentences, and correctly use a wide range of grammatical forms, including modals in the past and present to express advisability, regret, and certainty, and appropriately use verb forms.

Program Learning Outcomes

After completing the program, students will be prepared to begin Level 4 ESLL credit and NCEL noncredit course work through gaining proficiency in the following areas:

• increase English proficiency in academic reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar skills necessary to be successful in more advanced ESLL courses and courses in other disciplines.
• develop awareness of student success strategies for reading, writing, and classroom communication.
• gain confidence to seek assistance in class and around campus as needed to self-advocate.
